The Hampshire Workbench
There is something deeply comforting about watching an old, battered piece of furniture being brought back to life. If you have ever found yourself glued to the television watching the BBC program "The Repair Shop", you will know exactly what I mean. There is a quiet magic in watching expert hands strip away decades of grime, repair a fractured joint, and uncover the beautiful soul of an object that everyone else had given up on. It makes you feel like the world is a slightly kinder, more thoughtful place.
But you do not need to look to a television studio in West Sussex to find that level of dedication and craftsmanship. Right here in our local community, tucked away in the picturesque Hampshire village of Hartley Wintney on West Green Road, we have our very own haven of restoration and renewal.
Welcome to The Hampshire Workbench.
If the name sounds relatively new to you, the faces behind it certainly will not be. This wonderful local business was formerly known as "Sisters Create", originally started back in 2020 by sisters Brenda Tasker and Noleen Le Blanc. Since those early days, their passion for reviving vintage pieces has grown beautifully, so much so that Brenda’s husband, Rob, has officially joined the workbench team to take on structural mends and woodwork.
What began as a shared love for arts, crafts, and creative workshops has blossomed into a full-scale family rescue service for worn-out furniture.

In today's fast-paced, "use and dispose of" society, the philosophy behind The Hampshire Workbench feels like a massive breath of fresh air. We have become so accustomed to flat-pack furniture made of compressed chipboard that is designed to be thrown away the moment we move house or change our décor. It is a wasteful cycle that leaves our homes feeling temporary and strips our living spaces of character.
Brenda, Noleen, and Rob represent the exact opposite of that throwaway culture. They look at a dated, scratched, or structurally neglected piece of solid vintage timber and they do not see rubbish - they see potential. They see the craftsmanship of a bygone era, a piece of history that deserves a second act.
By restoring, reviving, and re-imagining these objects in a fresh, contemporary way, they are championing a brilliant ethic of recycling and upcycling that keeps high-quality wood out of landfills and puts soul back into homes.
Walking through what they do is like ticking off a wishlist for anyone who appreciates fine interiors and sentimental preservation. They offer custom commissions, meaning if you have a family heirloom that is looking a little tired or a piece that simply does not match your current room décor you can invite them in for a consultation. They will bring colour swatches, design ideas, and their expert knowledge to transform your existing furniture into a bespoke masterpiece. From a stunning William Morris-inspired chest of drawers to vibrant, red-lacquered oriental sideboards accented with delicate gold wax, their gallery is a masterclass in artistic flair.
But it is not just large items of furniture that get the star treatment on West Green Road. The Hampshire Workbench also specialises in smaller, highly emotional restorations. They upholster footstools and dining chairs, and they will even replace those saggy, soft sofa cushions to make your favourite armchair feel brand new again.
Perhaps most touching of all, they offer a teddy bear and soft toy restoration service. Just like the experts on "The Repair Shop", they understand that a tatty, well-loved vintage teddy bear or a scratched antique jewellery box often holds more value in family memories than the most expensive piece of modern luxury.

What makes this business extra special, though, is that they do not keep all this magical knowledge to themselves. If you have ever wanted to roll up your sleeves and learn how to prep, sand, paint, and decorate a piece of furniture on your own, Brenda and Noleen run fantastic, flexible 1-2-1 and small group upcycling workshops right here in Hartley Wintney.
You can bring your own small item, spend a brilliant day from ten until five learning how to master the tools, stencils, and finishes, and walk away with a piece you created yourself - along with a full stomach from a provided lunch and, quite possibly, a bit of paint in your hair.

Supporting businesses like The Hampshire Workbench is about so much more than just buying a beautiful new chest of drawers or fixing a wobbly table leg. It is about investing in our local community, slowing down the urge to constantly buy new, and celebrating the people who look at the old and neglected and choose to make it beautiful again.
If you want to see their latest collection of upcycled furniture for sale, chat about a custom commission, or book yourself onto a workshop, you can get in touch with Brenda, Noleen, and Rob via their website or drop them an email.
Let us keep giving these cherished items a new lease of life.
